November 3, 2017

Tomorrow, November 4 is a huge day in the Curtin family as it is the birthday of our twins, Sara and Lindsay. As much as I’d like to write about my daughters, I actually found two slightly more famous people who share their birthday: Will Rogers and Vincent Wilfork.

Sorry, if you are not a football fan or if you are a professional Patriot’s hater but it’s difficult for anybody to dislike Vincent Lamar Wilfork. Despite his professional playing weight ranging from 325 to 350 pounds, he continually displayed amazing athleticism. Big Vince established himself as one of the greatest defensive lineman of all time and surely will be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  One little known fact is that Vince holds the all-time Florida High School record for the shot put and also won the state discus championship.

Since retiring this year, Vince has been dedicated to charitable endeavors including the personal delivery of over 3,000 meals to Hurricane Harvey victims. Here is a 3 minute tribute to Vince including footage of his interception runbacks (which always bring a smile).

Will Rogers

Born November 4, 1879, Will Rogers led an incredibly interesting life as a cowboy, vaudeville performer, actor and newspaper columnist. Even though Rogers died over 80 years ago (plane crash in Alaska), his social commentary and humorous quotes make him omni-present. Here are nine of his most notable:

  • Diplomacy is the art of saying ‘Nice doggie’ until you can find a rock.
  • Nothing you can’t spell will ever work.
  • Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.
  • Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today
  • We can’t all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.
  • The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf has.
  • The trouble with practical jokes is that very often they get elected
  • The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn’t get worse every time congress meets
  • Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.
